Frequently Asked Questions

Q&A - SAFFRON

Q:When was your Saffron last graded as Premium Grade Saffron?

A: We have our Saffron tested after every harvest season and we have done this since 2015. Our Saffron is tested against the strict International standards called the ISO3632:2 . We do NOT send our Saffron overseas for grading, we use our talent in New Zealand! This means you purchase our Sargol Saffron with confidence knowing we are Premium Grade 1 each year and we do not claim from a prior year that we do not sell anymore!

Q: Can I buy Saffron threads from Wynyard Estate Saffron?

A. Absolutely, we stock our Saffron in the Saffron Studio. We do not do bulk lots anymore as our focus is on our Hawk Eye - Saffron capsules for eye health.

Q: I would like to buy a larger amount of Saffron - do you do wholesale pricing and export?

A: As 95% of our Saffron is now used in our Hawk Eye for eye health capsules, we no longer export our Saffron or sell in large amounts.

Q: Why don't I just buy Saffron threads to support my eye health?

A. Simple - accurate dose and quality. It's impossible to tell how many threads are needed to deliver the right dose to you. Hawk Eye takes care of this ensuring you receive the right amount of Saffron in each capsule. Also - only Premium grade 1 Saffron is sufficient for health applications. Wynyard Estate is the only Saffron grower in NZ who consistently measures quality under the strict ISO 3632:2 quality criteria every harvest season within NZ. If the Saffron hasn't been measured under this standard you can't tell whether it's the real deal or not.

Q: How can I tell if my Saffron is the real deal?

Q. If you've not bought from us, check the packaging and see if the Saffron as been tested under ISO 3632:2 and what year it was graded.  Check the Aroma, Colour and Taste ratings (see our Saffron Quality) page for more information. Another quick test is to place your Saffron is hot water. The water  should start to turn yellow, but the Saffron thread should remain red. If it turns opaque, then it's fake and the colour you see is dye. Be wary - it is estimated that 50% of all Saffron products have been adulterated in some way.  Moreover, if your dried Saffron has yellow and white bits, we're sorry to say that these parts are not Saffron. These are left on there to increase the weight, so you pay more for less. Only the red part of the stigma has any value.

Q: Where else can I buy your Saffron?

A: You can purchase our Saffron from Marbecks in Dunedin, Feinerman's in Roxburgh, Johnson's Cottage Orchard in Roxburgh, Frances Nation in Christchurch ,Recharge Bar in Clyde
